What is By The Way?

The By The Way conference began several years ago as an opportunity to set aside time to learn about who God is, what he has said, and why that matters for our lives.

The name for the conference comes from Deuteronomy 6:7

5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise…

About By The Way 2022

Dr. Bob Smart is a pastor at Christ Church in Normal. We are excited to share that he will be the speaker at this year’s By the Way conference, teaching on our Identity in Christ. This conference is free, all are invited to attend! There will be a meal from 5:00 to 5:45 and teaching will begin at 6:00pm each evening.

Bob and Karen have been married for 37 years, raised five children, and enjoy their sixteen grandchildren. Dr. Bob Smart (PhD University of Wales) has been the senior pastor of Christ Church, PCA (Bloomington-Normal, IL) for 28 years, and served on staff with the Navigators at Purdue University and Ball State prior.

Bob and Karen regularly teach conferences and occasionally seminary courses. He has published on Jonathan Edwards and revival, marriage, parenting, spiritual warfare, and four seasons of Gospel transformation. These books include Jonathan Edwards’s Apologetic for the Great Awakening (Reformation Heritage Books, 2009), Pentecostal Outpourings: Revival in the Reformed Tradition (Grand Rapids, MI: Reformation Heritage Books, 2016), and four books on spiritual formation: Embrace Your Identity in Christ: Renouncing Lies and Foolish Strategies; Calling to Christ: Where’s My Place? ; Intentionality for Christ: What’s My Aim?; Legacy from Christ: What’s My Message? (Westbow: a Division of Zondervan, 2017).

Recent books on marriage and family include: Enhancing One Another’s Glory in Christ: Premarital and Marital Counsel; and Willows by Flowing Streams: Raising Children into Gospel Maturity (MN: Lighthouse Pub., 2019 & 2020). Also, one on spiritual warfare entitled, Waging War in an Age of Doubt: A Biblical, Theological, Historical, and Practical Guide for Spiritual Warfare Today (Reformation Heritage, 2019).

His efforts in global missions includes teaching Missions Perspectives locally and regionally, and equipping pastors and campus staff in thirty-two nations.
